In 1996, “Scream” came out of nowhere to bring the horror genre back from the dead like Michael Myers sitting up after a coat hanger to the eyeball. Acclaimed as the smartest horror film in years, it yielded a trilogy that would gross hundreds of millions of dollars and clear a path for dozens of self-aware genre flicks ranging from “Zombieland” to “Adaptation.”

Now, it’s getting ready to come back again for another stab.

“It’s going good,” said writer Kevin Williamson, giving us an exclusive update on the new trilogy (!) he’s writing. “I’ve gotta finish that baby.” Read more

Middle Eastern oil refineries have nothing on the tar sands of Alberta, Canada. According to a new documentary, one of the world’s most polluting industrial projects lies just north of the American border. Not only do Americans not know it, but our insatiable appetite for oil is also keeping oil extractors in business.

Dirty Oil, which premiered Oct. 11 at the 17th annual Hamptons International Film Festival, documents the oil extraction process in the tar sands of Northern Alberta. Narrated by Canadian actress Neve Campbell (of Scream and Party of Five fame), the film mines the contentious relationship between government, oil industry and environmental interests. The process of gleaning oil from tar sands, environmentalists say, emits three times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil and takes the energy equivalent of two barrels of oil to produce three. It uses four times as much water and heat. Read more

Peter Bart at Variety is reporting Scream IV will start production in April or May 2010 as the first film in a new trilogy and Dimension is in talks with Scream 1, 2 and 3 helmer Wes Craven to return for the new franchise. On top of that he reports Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette will star.

The news comes as part of a piece announcing a new slate of films Dimension is putting into production. Along with Scream IV there’s word Robert Rodriguez is writing a Spy Kids IV which he apparently will direct (where will he find the time) and will start shooting in March 2010 according to Dimension head Bob Weinstein.

Along with those two films there’s also the previously announced Halloween 3-D and a remake of Children of the Corn. Weinstein is heading back to the franchise mold with plans to also shoot sequels to Hellraiser and Scanners in 3D as well as remakes of Short Circuit and American Warewolf in London.

Weinstein told Variety “there is no question that financing is readily available to produce and market these films.”

Neve Campbell has revealed that she could be involved in the next Scream film.

The actress, best known for her role as Sidney Prescott in the horror franchise, said Scream 4 is on the cards.

“Well they’re gonna make it and they’re trying to get me in,” she said. “We’re in negotiations, we’ll see.”

Speaking on the red carpet at the London premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s new movie Inglourious Basterds, the Canadian actress revealed she was a big fan of the controversial US director.

“He’s a visionary and that’s what I love about him, I love the fact that he really tries to break barriers,” she said.

Neve also said she loves everything about living in the UK – especially its proximity to other countries.

The Hollywood star, who first made an impact in early 90s show Party Of Five playing Lost star Matthew Fox’s sister, said: “I love the city (London), I love the culture here, I love being close to so many countries.”

She added: “I love being so close to the other countries and cultures, I really love that about it. Being from Canada it takes eight hours to get across the country, it takes a long time to get anywhere else. So I love being in a place where you can visit other places.”

This is more of a news post keeping open the possibility of a new movie in the Scream franchise than actually delivering any kind of casting news as Entertainment Weekly reports Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette have been approached to return to the franchise by writer/creator Kevin Williamson. However, that isn’t necessarily the interesting part.

EW goes on to say Williamson has been working on a whole new trilogy that will bring back many of the characters from the original franchise, making this sound like we are talking about more of a remake/reboot than an actual Scream 4.

EW says the hope is to begin work on the new franchise this fall and there is no word on whether Neve Campbell as the lead protagonist will be returning.
